Free sport programmes keeping communities together through winter

As Kiwis gear up for the winter sport season, a number of local initiatives will open the doors for more to join in the fun.

Through the Community Connect programme, tamariki and whānau will be able to try their hand at multiple sports for free in six locations nationwide over several weeks.

The programme provides multiple benefits for local whānau and rangatahi within their communities to interact in activities that promote inclusivity, participation, whanaungatanga in a fun and safe environment.

Sandi Hackett, Community Connect General Manager says “It’s an outstanding outcome to be able to provide these opportunities for the community and encourage people to get out and be active.”

“It’s all about creating a fun, social and inclusive environment for the whole whānau to be involved which has been an incredible success.”

Noodle brand, Indomie, has recently supported the initiative, providing participants in the Tāmaki Touched and Raumanga programmes with noodle packets to use as a base for quick, healthy meals for whānau.

Josh Simpkins, Auckland Community Connect team leader said “We’re stoked to have Indomie’s support, helping us to achieve one of our key outcomes of healthier living with the provision of regular kai throughout the winter months.”

Eugene Rush, Marketing Manager Acton International Marketing – distributors of Indomie in New Zealand said “Indomie is really proud to support Community Connect. It’s a chance to support a programme at the grass roots level and make a difference where there is a real need.”
